Why Are Gas Prices Rising – California gas price will posibly hit $4 this weekend

Why are gas prices rising - The average retail price for a gallon of regular gasoline in California climbed an additional 5.9 cents overnight to $3.986, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report. The state’s average is almost certain to cross the $4-a-gallon mark sometime over the weekend.

 

The California average has climbed 11.1 cents in just the past two days, and some parts of the state are already averaging more than $4 a gallon.

San Francisco gas prices crossed that threshold Thursday and rose to $4.066 a gallon Friday. Los Angeles and Long Beach joined the $4 club overnight, rising 5.7 cents to an average of $4.013 a gallon. Orange County also hit the mark overnight, rising 5.6 cents to an average of $4 a gallon.

 

Retail gasoline is still catching up to the fact that U.S. oil prices climbed during most of July. The price of a barrel of oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange is down 39 cents so far Friday to $93.05, but that is still more than $24 a barrel higher than it was in late June.

 

The much more recent catalyst for higher fuel prices was Monday’s fire at Chevron Corp.’s Richmond refinery in Northern California. The fire broke out at the facility’s No. 4 crude unit Monday evening, knocking it out of commission.

The Richmond refinery is the state’s third-biggest, with an operating capacity of 243,000 barrels a day. It is an important fuel provider for Southern California.

Crude units fulfill an early stage in the refining process, distilling oil into various fractions of different boiling ranges, each of which are then processed further in the other refinery processing units, Chevron said.

The parts of the refinery that were not affected by the blaze are operating, but Chevron has said in statements that it is producing fuel in reduced amounts.

Chevron has released its first written report on the incident, in a document sent to the Contra Costa County Department of Health Services. The report offered information on the amount of and type of chemicals in the refinery’s flare emissions and other basic information.

Chevron was required to submit the report because of the requirements of Contra Costa County’s 72-hour Incident Notification Policy. The report is mainly a summary of the incident, including the amount and kind of emissions released, as well as a summary of Chevron’s response.

The report did not speculate on the cause of the fire or give an estimate of the amount of damage.

Some fuel experts said that the refinery fire has Chevron looking to buy vacuum gasoil to help it maintain production at the refinery. Brad Arrington of the Oil Price Information Service said that vacuum gasoil is the primary feedstock for the production of gasoline and other products.

Depending on what companies have been up to – some are up, some are down – but they all ultimately reflect whatever’s been happening on international oil markets. With benchmark prices averaging historic highs ($114/b) in the first half of the year, bumper profits should be rolling in. And true enough, big oil has delivered some big results this time round. But read between the ‘numbers’, and it’s becoming alarmingly clear – big oil has major problems cross subsidising cheap gas right now, and nowhere more so than in the United States. Something has to give.

Take Exxon Mobil as the best example. Breakdown its second quarter $15.9bn profits, (up $5.2bn from last year), and they start to look less impressive. It made handsome returns spinning off a Japanese refining unit, further buttressed by $7.5bn divestments and tax related items, which once subtracted, leaves you with a rather more modest $8.4bn. That’s not the worrying bit for the Houston major, but the fact that Exxon only made $678m in its US upstream operations due to depressed gas prices. The consistent line from Rex Tillerson was that Exxon had deep enough pockets to invest through the cycle after its acquisition of XTO in 2010. Not so last month; Tillerson admitted energy companies were ‘losing their shirts’ from low gas prices.

 

European majors are no different. Royal Dutch Shell posted seemingly decent $5.7bn earnings, but they actually chalked up a ‘$1bn’ fall on last year’s figures. The core reason was depressed US gas prices - that have become low margin at best - negative plays over full cycle economics at worst. Just ask UK based BG Group, they just wrote off $1.3bn in US natural gas assets and associated impairment charges, seeing pre-tax profits slip to $609m. That’s before you go through the long list of US shale players that have been slapped with impairments over the past year. Anadarko Petroleum, Noble, Encana, SM Energy, and of course the ‘poster boy’ of shale gas frack-ups, Chesapeake, that’s racing against the write down clock, trying to court finance from wherever (and whoever) they can. As a corollary, many analysts expect BHP Billiton to face thwacking write downs from $19bn shale purchases from Chesapeake and Petrohawk in 2011.

No doubt bullish (sp?) estimates on shale acreage haven’t helped; it’s always a fine line between ‘optimistic’ price forecasts and overbooking reserves, but the real problem here is American shale becoming an increasingly lame prospect to sink future capital. That certainly applies to US mid-caps that have to keep sourcing external financing to develop new plays, on the spurious basis they can claim some kind of ‘net present value’. Even for bigger international beasts that can leverage their own balance sheets at minimal cost, shareholders would expect them to find far better value beyond US shores.

It all stands in stark contrast to a couple of years back when oil majors were telling shareholders not to worry, ‘we’re Big Gas as well’. Shell boasted that 55% of its overall output would come from gas by 2012, with seven out of the eight projects completed by Exxon all coming from natural gas developments in 2010. Not exactly news many equity analysts would be cheerful about today, particularly with serious cost overruns afflicting fiddly LNG developments globally.

But as far as the US is concerned we can expect several things to happen. The first is IOCs will increasingly get into wets to offset dry shale economics. That can already be seen from Shell, and indeed, explains many of Chesapeake’s woes getting caught short balancing their portfolio away from low margin shale. The second is an ongoing shift from coal to gas (a move that’s clipped US emissions by 450 million tones over the past five years). Many will also talk up the gasification of US transport to help firm prices (and ‘screw’ OPEC in the process). All ‘nice stuff’, but it holds zero interest for big oil. If they’re going to keep faith with US shale and invest through the cycle, that means taking a serious look at gas-to-liquids and far more importantly, LNG export potential to capitalise on enormous spreads between the US and Asia. Shell has said as much; BG Group is banking on exactly that coming good, otherwise it’s just made the worst corporate bet in history. Get FERC to fast track LNG export facilities, and prices should firm on Henry Hub – at least to get the majority of US shale plays back in the black.

 

The US can of course just keep ignoring this – hope that prices organically firm, or that further technology gains drive wider margins ‘feasible’ for IOCs to keep cross subsidising US gas production. Maybe so, but it’s worth remembering that big oil operates on a global basis, which inevitably entails opportunity-costs wherever they decide to set up shop. Continually haemorrhaging cash on US shale isn’t really part of the script, not unless they stick around and wait for Chesapeake et al. to implode and pick up the pieces. But even then, it’s the long term export potential IOCs really want, both for oil and gas.

 

Economics makes that a very simple proposition, just as politics makes it fiendishly difficult. But before the folks in Washington decide which way to go on exports, they should consider a final twist in the shale gas tale: The more gas America keeps at home, the more likely it becomes that the only international investment they’ll attract is from Asian National Oil Companies. After all, if the economics don’t stack up, that only leaves those with a strategic mandate at the table. No doubt that’s what most IOCs are banking on if they finally decide to call time on US shale. Bailing out to Beijing?

How To Use Traffic Exchanges Effectively – do traffic exchanges work

A manual traffic exchange is a membership web site that allows you to view web pages selected by other members and allows other members to view web pages you select. In other words, a traffic exchange allows members to exchange traffic between their sites.

You can sign up as a free traffic exchange member or as a paid member with a monthly subscription. Once you sign up, you will have the opportunity to provide the URLs for several web pages of your choosing. You may also be able to include banner ads and text ads.

As you might imagine, your goal in joining a traffic exchange is to promote your URLs by having other members view them. You earn credits to have your pages displayed when you view other members’ pages. Free members normally must view more pages to earn a credit than paid members. You’ll typically view each page while a timer counts down, usually from 10 to 30 seconds, before you can move on to the next page.

You can also purchase credits or receive a monthly allocation of credits as a paid member. But, the most economical way to receive credits as a beginner is to earn them by surfing.

To earn credits as quickly as possible, you may want to surf traffic exchanges by opening up multiple tabs in your browser. You’ll view a different traffic exchange in each tab. So, immediately after clicking to the next page in one traffic exchange you’ll move to the next tab and click to the next page on that exchange. In this way you are not waiting for any timer to count down, but are earning credits on multiple traffic exchanges as quickly as possible.

Because most other members also use tabbed browsing, your page has only a second or two to capture their attention. Your page’s headline must immediately interest them and distract them from clicking to the next page.

You can build a downline in two ways. One way is to cross promote. That is, you use a splash page from traffic exchange “A” on traffic exchange “B” and visa versa. The second way to build a downline is to make use of a traffic building resource like TrafficHoopla. TrafficHoopla tracks the performance of traffic exchanges and ranks them in order of effectiveness.

You can join TrafficHoopla and the traffic exchanges they monitor. After joining each exchange you can add your program ID for each exchange to TrafficHoopla’s database.

Then, when you advertise TrafficHoopla, the links to the various exchanges will contain your program IDs. When someone joins the traffic exchanges via your TrafficHoopla link, you’ll gain a downline in each of those traffic exchanges.

So, by advertising only TrafficHoopla you can gain a large downline in a number traffic exchanges. This is a very powerful technique for building downlines on the traffic exchanges.

Build a List

The second thing you need to do as you build your downline is to build an opt-in list. Building a list is one of the primary uses of traffic exchanges. A quarter of the web pages in a traffic exchange ask for your email address while another 38% of the pages will ask for your email address when you click to a second page.

 

An opt-in list allows you to send out newsletters that cover a topic of interest to your list members. As you cover topics relevant to your list members you’ll build credibility with them. Your list members will then be more likely to investigate the products you recommend in your newsletter. And, when you recommend your own products or affiliate products you’ll make money when your list members make a purchase.

You’ve probably heard that “the money is in the list.” When you have a large list you’ll be able to make money every time you send out a newsletter. The larger your list, the more money you’ll be able to make.

So, remember that the most effective use of your time while starting out with traffic exchanges is first to build a large downline and second to build a list. Doing these things will put you head and shoulders above the average traffic exchange member.

There are many ways to cheat traffic exchanges and generate massive numbers of hits to your website. Some are complex and some are simple. Below is a list of some of the more popular methods of cheating.
Give yourself a point for each method of cheating that you already employ and then rate yourself on our cheat-o-meter.


– Opening the same exchange in several windows to generate multiple hits at a time.
– Insert the Start URL from one exchange into the Target URL from another.
– Open multiple windows and minimise them until just the “Next Page” link is showing. Click away.
– Use a custom browser (eg – Crazy Browser) to “auto-click” through exchange programs so it generates hits while you watch Jerry Springer.
– Use custom made software designed to get around the cheat-protection on a traffic exchange.

In truth, if you are a serial cheater, then you have probably stopped reading this article when you realised it wasn’t going to teach you anything you didn’t already know.
If you have played around with any of these ideas, then you might find the idea of being called a “thief” extreme. I disagree.
If you are using any of these methods, you are one step away from shoplifting sweets from the corner shop.
And this is why.
When someone creates a new traffic exchange a lot of time and money goes into the projects creation and administration. They may give away free hits as an introductory offer but, after that, hits can only be purchased or earned.
This is how the owner makes his income. This is how they see a return on their efforts.
If you earn these credits through fradulent means, this is akin to getting a friend to clock you out of work while you take the afternoon off. You are earning something you haven’t WORKED for.
I’ve heard it argued that traffic exchange owners make so much money, they barely notice the lost credits that cheaters steal.
This is the same ridiculous argument that says it is OK to steal from large department stores because “they can afford it”. At the end of the day, the losses are added to the prices that honest people choose to pay. Honest surfer’s hard earned credits are wasted by cheats.
And you are still a thief whether the individual you steal from can afford it or not.
I should also point out that the majority of traffic exchange owners are not rich. The successful ones may make a tidy income, but the majority are probably struggling to break even. Stealing credits does not help their endeavours.
If you are using, or considering, any kind of cheat method, please think twice. Think about your reputation, think about the owner you are stealing from, and think about Dylan Campbell whose credits are being frittered away on Crazy Browser enthusiasts who think they have discovered something new.
Theft isn’t new. It just keeps changing shape.
And for all those smug surfers out there who are sat back, smugly thinking, “I never cheat”. Do you honestly view EVERY website for the ENTIRE time the counter is ticking?
I doubt it. And let’s be sensible, it is almost impossible not to break the occasional term or condition. So many traffic exchanges, each with their own unique demands. Who can remember every single last rule?
I’m not demanding perfection from surfers, just a certain amount of fair play. So let me tell you how I surf.
Am I a cheat? No. Do I break terms & conditions? Yes. Do I view EVERY website that I click through? Yes. And I believe that it is every traffic exchange users duty to do the same.
Step 1) Make a list of all the traffic exchanges you belong to. For this example, pretend I am a member of 20.
Step 2) List all the days you know you can spend at least 20 minutes surfing. For this example, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Step 3) Share out the exchanges equally among the days. For this example, I can assign five exchanges to each day.
Step 4) Visit the Start URL of the first exchange on your list. Go to the menu bar of IE and click, “Favourites” and then, “Add to Favourites”. Create a new folder called, “Surf Monday” or something similar and add the Start URL to this folder. Repeat for the next four exchanges on your list.
Step 5) Repeat Step 4 for the next five exchanges on your list and place them in a new folder called, “Surf Wednesday” or something similar. Repeat this process for Friday’s and Saturday’s.
When Monday comes around, open the appropriate folder for Monday’s and open all the exchanges in that folder in separate browser windows. Make sure they are ALL full size.
You should see each copy of IE that you have opened, listed in the Windows bar at the bottom of your screen. If they are grouped together, click on the IE group and you should be able to see each Traffic Exchange listed individually. Make sure you haven’t acidentally opened the same Traffic Exchange twice.
Click on the first exchange and view the website. When the counter has finished click to the next site and IMMEDIATELY move to the next IE window. Precious seconds are wasted while the next website loads, so use them instead viewing the website in the next IE window.
Once again, view the website until the counter has finished, click to the next site and immediately move to the next browser window in your sequence.
Notice that I am not viewing each website for the full length of the counter, but I am viewing EVERY website. I, for one, would have no problem with my websites being viewed in this manner. Far better, than not being viewed at all because of a cheaters greed.
When you have viewed each browser window in sequence, return to the first browser window and repeat the process. If pop-ups are a problem, try the free Google Toolbar. A good pop-up stopper will make your surfing a lot easier.
If you come across a website that looks interesting, don’t stop surfing. If you have assigned 20 minutes for surfing, then you don’t want to break your rythym. Instead, right-click the mouse button inside the website you like the look of and select “Add to Favourites…”. Create a new folder called, “Look Later” or something similar, and add the website to this folder.
You MUST use the right-click technique rather than using the menu bar. Otherwise you will bookmark the traffic exchange and not the website you are interested in.
At the end of your surfing session, once a day, once a week or whenever you feel is appropriate, open the “Look Later” folder and spend as much time as you want examining the websites you selected and joining/investing in the programs that are worthwhile.
Assuming you can view all five browser windows twice a minute, that you spend 20 minutes in each surfing session and that the traffic exchange ratios average 2:1, this example would earn you 400 hits a week.
If you spent an hour each day surfing, this increases to 1200 hits a week. Not too shabby, especially when you start factoring in down-lines and other traffic generating programs you may use.
Final Thought — Honesty still prevails in this industry and it will continue to do so while people continue to champion the virtues of conducting business in a decent way. Cheaters may prosper, but so can the honest workers, if they are patient and don’t abandon their values. If you are a program owner and you catch a cheater, forget the two strikes, benefit of the doubt rubbish. Throw him out into the gutter where he belongs. I would rather be deleted from a program in error than make things easier for the thieves of this industry.
